The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi announced on August 4, 2026 "the appointment of Dr. Valerie Hillings as the inaugural Director of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi." The museum, a Frank Gehry-designed building with 30 galleries in the Saadiyat Cultural District, is scheduled to open on December 11, 2026.

Who Is Valerie Hillings?

Hillings is a Guggenheim veteran returning to the project she helped found. The announcement records that "From 2009 to 2018, she served as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation's Curator and Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs," and that she has led the North Carolina Museum of Art since 2018, a period in which annual attendance doubled to 1.2 million. Artforum, reporting the appointment on August 5, adds that "In her fourteen years at the Guggenheim, Hillings organized more than fifteen exhibitions on four continents."

Her own framing of the job is quoted in the release: "I am honoured to return to Abu Dhabi to complete the once-in-a-lifetime journey of founding and opening Guggenheim Abu Dhabi."

Why Does the Appointment Matter for Design Audiences?

Because a founding director decides what a museum's galleries argue, and this one opens with scale few institutions can match. The building offers 30 galleries and 11,600 square metres of indoor exhibition space plus 23,000 square metres outdoors, in a Frank Gehry design — a container large enough to hold contemporary art alongside the design and craft objects that Gulf institutions have increasingly collected. An inaugural director with two decades of curatorial experience shapes how those categories meet on the floor.

The opening also completes a cultural-district idea more than a decade in the making, and the appointment signals continuity rather than a late pivot: Hillings worked on the project's curatorial foundations during her earlier Guggenheim years. Hillings's own words about the building point to how she intends to use it. "I look forward to welcoming local and global audiences to the magnificent Frank Gehry-designed building and inviting them to explore points of interconnection and unique stories," she is quoted as saying in Artforum's report — the language of a curator planning narratives across a collection rather than a single marquee loan.

For readers who follow museums as the places where decorative arts and contemporary design are interpreted for the public, the December 11 opening — now with a named director and a documented curatorial record behind it — becomes the date to watch this winter.

The Decor Artist is an independent magazine; it sells nothing and takes no commercial relationship with the institutions it covers.
