On 7 July 2026, after the Red Dot Gala at Essen's Aalto Theater, the Red Dot Design Museum opened three exhibitions of this year's award winners: from 8 July, around 2,000 products awarded in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026 fill the museum's Norman Foster-converted boiler house — many in original form.

What can visitors actually see?

Three shows, one sweep. Design on Stage 2026 spreads the year's awarded products across five floors, spanning everyday objects, digital products and complex technical solutions, per the Red Dot magazine's exhibition account. Red Dot Milestones 2026 gathers the Best of the Best — products from 20 countries chosen by an international jury from thousands of entries — on the museum's first floor. A special exhibition, Epson Design – Value through Precision, honours this year's Design Team of the Year and runs to 16 August 2026.

The named exhibits set the range. The intelligent guitar TemPolor Melo-D from China pairs a familiar instrument with AI-powered learning; the limited-edition TYPE 3 MARC NEWSON wristwatch from Belgium's Ressence creates the illusion of time projected inside a domed sapphire crystal; the 700-kilogram KUKA KR IONTEC ultra industrial robot is the heaviest exhibit; and Honda's UNI-ONE personal mobility device, steered by shifting body weight, shows robotics dissolving physical barriers.

Why does it matter beyond Essen?

Because the show is a yearly census of product design. The jury of roughly 40 design experts travels to Essen to examine and evaluate the submitted products in person, and the winners then stay on view for nearly a full year — a rare chance to compare a guitar, a wristwatch, a robot and a mobility device under one roof and read the criteria that united them.

Where can readers see it, and for how long?

The setting is part of the argument. The museum has occupied the former boiler house of the Zollverein Coal Mine since 1997, in a complex that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001; the building was modernised in the early 1990s to plans by Lord Norman Foster, and the exhibitions change every year when the new award winners are selected. Design on Stage 2026/27 and Red Dot Milestones run until 1 June 2027, per the Red Dot magazine's account, with the Epson special exhibition closing 16 August 2026. Admission is 10 EUR, the museum is open daily 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and a mobility area on the ground floor gives the year's transport design its own stage.

What are the Four Qualities of Good Design?

The exhibition teaches the jury's own rubric, the Four Qualities of Good Design, through selected examples: the quality of function — what purpose does the product fulfil; the quality of seduction — is it aesthetically convincing; the quality of use — is it self-explanatory; and the quality of responsibility — is it sustainable or durable. As the award-ceremony exhibition page puts it, the four qualities describe areas of tension that shape the jury's understanding of design. Design on Stage and Milestones run until well into 2027, per the museum's exhibition page.
