Article, the Vancouver-based digital-first furniture brand, will open its first two United States stores in fall 2026 — a 2299 Alameda St location in San Francisco's Design District and a Bellevue, Washington unit at 700 Bellevue Way NE — each measuring roughly 7,500 to 8,200 square feet, per the company's May 14, 2026 announcement.

What is Article announcing?

Two showrooms, and a plan that reaches further: up to five locations by early 2027, including the Vancouver store that opened in August 2024 and a Toronto opening slated for late 2026. The company says its 2024 Vancouver debut drove 47 percent local revenue growth in 2025. Both U.S. stores will carry curated vignettes, a large swatch library, in-store ordering, and free interior design services, per the company's announcement.

Why is a digital brand opening stores now?

Because the West Coast is where its customers already are. "The West Coast has always been core to our business and represents roughly a quarter of total purchases," chief executive Aamir Baig said in the announcement. The U.S. is Article's largest market — roughly 80 percent of revenue, as the company told The Globe and Mail — and the two cities chosen reflect strong e-commerce performance there.

The move follows a sharp correction: Retail Dive, reporting on May 18, 2026, notes the brand grew 45 percent year over year as of March 2022, then laid off 216 employees months later after misjudging post-pandemic demand, returning to profitability in 2024. "We see physical retail as an extension of the business we built online and are approaching expansion with discipline," Baig said.

What will the stores offer shoppers?

The format is service-heavy rather than warehouse-like: retail vignettes styled as rooms, swatch libraries for judging bouclé and oak finishes in person, and free design help. In Vancouver, Retail Dive reports, in-store average order values beat online orders by more than 20 percent — the number that convinced a disciplined retailer that touching the sofa sells the sofa. For design readers in the Bay Area, a Design District address puts the brand among the city's interior design trade for the first time.

The timing also fits the industry's wider readjustment. Online furniture brands spent the early decade chasing growth; the ones opening physical rooms now are doing it after proving unit economics online first. Article's sequence — Vancouver in 2024, profitability restored the same year, and only then the United States — is the pattern Retail Dive's coverage highlights, and it is why the fall openings are worth watching even for shoppers outside the two cities: they signal where digitally native design retail is heading.
